Ever noticed how the most authentic, least pretentious Italian “trattoria” style restaurants often have those iconic red/white checkered tablecloths? There is sometimes conjecture over the origin of the trend; some claim that it is a practical measure to hedge against the inevitable splatter of tomato-based sauces, while others claim that the use of such table decoration was a signal to potential diners to expect a traditional, unpretentious, hearty and authentic dining experience.
